This book should be required reading for all men in organizational leadership positions.

I truly believe whether you are a male marketplace or faith based organizational leader or minister, this book should be required reading in your university or seminary leadership program. It was required reading a few years back by the organizational leader in question when I was hired as a consultant by a faithbased organization to address a major male leadership concern. Dr. MaryKate Morse’ book was read and then discussed with me by the person in question. Her book addressed a number of leadership deficits that I was attempting to deal with in hopes of providing a viable solution if possible to the organization where this individual was concerned.

Dr. MaryKate Morse is professor of leadership and spiritual formation at George Fox Evangelical Seminary in Portland, Oregon. She is a speaker, a retreat leader and a Friends pastor who has planted two churches with leadership teams. She also serves as a mentor and spiritual director to church and parachurch leaders.

This book addresses how we [my focus here is on the male leader] don’t just lead with our voice and our decisions, but we lead with our bodies. The way we as men take up space in a room, the way we use our physical size, voice to intimidate, our tenure, table seating position, reputation in group settings where and when women are present influences others and in the process we as men can be demeaning to women in general and to women in leadership positions.

In Leighton Ford’ endorsement of the book on its back cover he notes, “If we are going to lead like Jesus, then we too must know how to use the power of space and body in a way that empowers others. This is an important book, breaking new ground and speaking biblically and practically to a blind sport in our leadership.”

Dan Kimball, pastor and author of They Like Jesus but Not the Church, said in his book endorsement, “I haven’t read any other book which talks more openly and realistically about the honest, raw, wondrous complexities of leadership.”

I encourage you as a male organizational or faithbased leader to purchase and read this book. You will become a better leader if you will read and then implement these considerations into your leadership DNA.
